Laser rhinoplasty

Laser rhinoplasty is a relatively new development, and of benefit to patients with particularly thick skin. Certain ethnic groups, such as African Americans, are more likely to fall into this category. If your skin is thicker than average there are limitations on the results that can be achieved through nose surgery, as a typical operation only makes modifications to the bone and cartilage. This meant that in the past experienced plastic surgeons had to rely on measures such as reducing the fatty tissues and removing cartilage from the nasal tip, to create greater definition in the new shape of the nose.
Now, however, some cosmetic surgeons are using laser treatment to enhance the results of rhinoplasty. This is carried out one or two months after surgery has been done to reshape the nose, to remove excess skin from the tip of the nose and also to improve the appearance of the skin by reducing pore size. More than one treatment may be necessary to achieve the desired result.
Laser rhinoplasty can also be used to correct skin conditions which are causing nasal deformity, in order to restore a more natural appearance to the nose. Most commonly this condition is rhinophyma, which is an advanced form of Rosacea and gives the skin a reddened and thickened appearance. Laser excision by a CO2 laser or the Erbium YAG laser is the only way of correcting the malformation, although treatments such as Acutane may also be prescribed to halt the conditions progression. Further medical uses of laser rhinoplasty include the correction of congenital vascular malformations.
If you feel that you could benefit from this type of surgery, most clinics offer a free initial consultation where you can discuss your needs with a qualified rhinoplasty specialist.
